I hail from one of the more trendy suburbs of my small town madurai which has even till now withstood the onslaughts of rampant commercialisation..I cant tell tat it is really modern..but when compared to the quaint small streets in the temple town..the streets are broader..My area boasts the only Coffee day in mdu..Nilgiris..then a few gift shops, eat outs and hang out places..In spite of all those I some how prefer the spots around the temple...Is it contempt for familiarity or due to the mere reason tat the temple side has been few places in which i have not frequented often???Some how I prefer walkin in those narrow streets to my own place..
The first thing u will notice in the temple streets is tat u will find it hard to drive a two wheeler or even a cycle over there..The mere idea of taking a four wheeler is absurd!!!So park ur car in the masi streets or the veli veedhis or the specific parkin areas..and then start walkin..It is a feast to ur senses strolling slowly..makin ur way to the teeming crowd..engaged in all small buisness activities...Small is always beautiful..So is the mentality of live and let live which is ingrained in the mentality of the ppl over her..The are not big airconditioned malls over here..Malls which unshamefully display brand names..monopolisation of industry..Here are small traders who charmingly display their array of wares...Coaxing u skillfuly to buy..Allowin u to bargain to your hearts content.. I like tat.One more charm over here is tat there are entire streets dedicated to the sellin of specific wares..There is the amman sanathi for mainly dresses, valaiyal kadai veedhi for imitation jewellery..Vengala kadai veedhi..the paper market for stationary..the fruit market..the onion market and wat not..and everythin in whole sale and damn cheap!!!!
Another haunt of mine is the old book shop located near the old selvi book house..I usually go there with the reason tat am going to buy second hand ref bks for my next semester..and then well u can sit down in the musty book shop with the smell of old books and read read read till ur eyes pop out..Sidney sheldons..jeffrey archer's short stories..ken follett.wat not have i read over there!!!
Life is always transient..Yeah people are changin over here too..There is change in the mindset of the people..Migration towrds better opportunities...But old beauties should not fade away...In nostalgia..signin out..
You need to take me to that book shop next time I am there! Never heard of that! Glad to see you blogging! Welcome to the blogworld
